The Math Common Core calls for students to be fluent in computation including being able to do multi-digit computation mentally. That is the focus of this workshop. One major shift in the Common Core standards for Math is the emphasis on strategies and properties rather than algorithms. Participants will learn the difference between strategies and algorithms and how to give students a deep understanding of strategies and how to use them. Teachers will learn about the progression of operations in the standards, tools to use (number lines, ten frames, 100 charts, arrays, rekenreks, etc.), and ways to represent student thinking during number talks. Teachers will also practice a wide variety of strategies themselves and then watch short videos of students using these same strategies.
