The new dates are:

October 20, 2015, January 12, 2016 and March 3, 2016 (you must attend all three sessions)

Camp Invention is an experience unlike any other summer enrichment program for first through sixth graders. At Camp Invention, children question everything and realize they’re capable of anything. Creative challenges bring critical concepts to life each day at Camp Invention. Our programs are led by qualified educators who are dedicated to motivating each child. No other camp has the support of organizations so committed to the spirit of invention.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses the Center for Educational Opportunities (CEO) will be offering scholarships in the form of rebates to attendees of the 2015 Camp Invention. The funds the sponsors donate will be equally divided among camp participants and distributed at Camp Invention’s conclusion.

Illinois DNR: Registration Underway for Upcoming ENTICE Workshops for Educators

Register for upcoming ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) workshops from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. ENTICE workshops offer training on Illinois-specific topics and supply educators with the tools needed to implement the topic into curriculum immediately.
Participants learn from resources professionals, take part in activities and spend time outdoors (where appropriate). Continuing Professional Development Units are available at all ENTICE workshops.

KQED Mindshift: Bringing Scientists to Schools, and the Thrill of Field Trips to Class

In many schools, field trips are becoming a rare luxury. But what if there was a way to bring the excitement that students show for those real-world experiences into the classroom?

An Australian organization called Scientists in Schools has flipped the field trip model, pairing volunteer scientists and mathematicians with classrooms around the country. Australian schools, like many schools around the world, don’t teach a lot of science at the primary school level. Teachers, who are responsible for covering all  subjects, lack confidence when teaching science. Similarly, while there is a focus on numbers in primary grades, some of the broader elegance of math is lost. Australia performs well on international achievement tests, but its students report feeling disengaged and don’t often choose to specialize in math and science as they get older.
